Description
Join us in welcoming the Return of DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM!

This versatile and popular company from New York city will
dance George Balanchine's Agon, Alvin Ailey's Lark Ascending, Donald Byrd's Contested Space and a new ballet by John Alleyne, Far, But Close.

In 1969, Arthur Mitchell, the first African- American to join a major ballet company (New York City Ballet in the 1950's) founded this first (and only) classical ballet company in the world expressly to give African- American dancers a chance to perform classical ballet. DTH is based in the iconic African-American stronghold of the arts: north of 110th Street, Manhattan, New York City.

DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM has performed all over the world, delighting and inspiring audiences for two generations, and has appeared under Lively Arts Foundation auspices no fewer than four times in the Foundation's first decades of bringing world class ballet to the Central Valley.

Now under the artistic directorship of long- time DTH prima ballerina Virginia Johnson, the company returns to the Saroyan for the first time since 2002.
