After many years of picking bluegrass on stage, and a variety of other music venues all over California, four friends officially formed Grassfire in 2009. Grassfire features Dave Kyle on banjo, Doug Carlton on guitar, Stevo Gillett on mandolin, and Michael McDonald on bass. Each member of the band sings both lead and tight vocal harmonies. The band presents a mix of songs by other artists as well as numerous original compositions by each of the band members. Intricate instrumental breaks, furious picking, and emotional melodies are highlighted by Doug’s dynamic “Tony Rice style” guitar flat-picking and Stevo’s jazz-inspired mandolin breaks, tastefully backed up by Dave’s “Scruggs style” banjo playing and Michael’s rock-solid low end bass. The result is the smooth blended California bluegrass sound reflected in their “Alive & Picking” CD released in 2011.
